The useful question is not whether a gutter can technically be patched. It is whether the repair will address the actual failure and leave you with a system worth keeping.
Repair tends to make sense when
- Damage is limited to one or two areas
- The rest of the gutter remains straight and secure
- Leaks are at serviceable joints or end caps
- Downspout problems are the main issue
Replacement becomes more attractive when
- Multiple runs are distorted or sagging
- Leaks recur throughout the system
- Attachment points are failing in many areas
- The layout is poor enough that repairs will not correct drainage
