Bigger gutters can hold and move more water, but “bigger is better” is not a complete design rule. Gutter capacity needs to match the roof and the outlets that drain it.
Factors that push capacity needs upward
- Larger roof areas
- Steeper slopes
- Roof valleys that dump concentrated runoff into a short gutter section
- Long runs between outlets
- Layouts where downspout placement is constrained
A large trough paired with too few or restricted downspouts can still overflow.
