There is not one distance that works for every property. The real goal is to discharge roof water where the site can carry it away rather than letting it run back toward the foundation.
What determines the right endpoint
- Ground slope away from the house
- Soil and landscaping conditions
- Walkways and driveways
- Low spots that already collect water
- Whether an extension can remain secure and unobtrusive
A splash block or short extension can work on a well-graded area, while a flat or vulnerable area may need water carried farther. Drainage work should also respect local property conditions and any applicable rules.
